What are Yasmin contraceptive pills?
Also referred to as oral contraceptives (OCs) or simply "the Pill", Yasmin is
birth control medication that contains hormones similar to those made naturally by a womans body.
Female hormones are named estrogens and progestins. Ethinyl estradiol is a name of the estrogen in most of todays birth control pills. There are many different progestins available, depending on brand.
How do Yasmin pills work?
Yasmin drug prevents the body from releasing eggs. In case the body releases an egg, the pill makes it difficult for sperm to reach the egg and fertilize it.
How effective is this in preventing pregnancy?
With perfect use, meaning the pills are taken at same time every day, EXACTLY as directed, they are more than 99% effective. With typical use, meaning the yasmin pill is not always taken exactly as directed, it is more than 95% effective.
When pregnancy does occur while on yasmin pills, usually, it was not taken as prescribed.
Certain things can temporarily change overall effectiveness of Yasmin contraceptive.
For example, being on antibiotics, St. Johns Wort, or certain seizure medications can reduce effectiveness.
Vomiting and diarrhea can also negatively affect pregnancy protection. If you require any of these medications or have experienced any of these physical symptoms, it is essential that you immediately speak with your health care professional.
Also use a backup method of prevention, such as condoms or spermicide.
How long do I have to be on the yasmin pill before it takes effect?
This depends on what day you start taking it. Day 1 Starters should be protected after first day they take the pill.
Sunday Starters need to be on the pills one week before pregnancy protection takes full effect.
Sunday Starters should use a backup prevention method (such as condoms or spermicides) for first week they are on it.
Please see order information for more details.
Is there a chance that I can get pregnant while on the pills?
If you take as instructed, your chance of becoming pregnant is less than one in 100.
About five out of 100 women using birth control pills become pregnant, but most of these pregnancies occur in
women who do not correctly follow instructions given in pill packs.
Does yasmin protect me against HIV infection (AIDS) and any other sexually transmitted disease (STD)?
No. This contraceptive is only indicated for prevention of pregnancy. It does NOT provide protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or infections. Condoms with spermicide can provide some protection from STDs.
