How does alesse birth control pill prevent pregnancy?
Alesse prevents pregnancy in two ways: it directly stops the ovary from releasing an egg, and it prevents sperm from entering the uterus by thickening the mucus produced by the cervix so that it forms a natural barrier.

How long can I stay on Alesse?
As long as you are healthy and you do not smoke, you can stay on the pill as long as you, and your health care provider, agree it is the right contraceptive for you.

Do I need a break from Alesse?
No. In fact, the idea of giving your body a "rest" from the Pill is just a myth. Many other forms of contraception are usually not as effective as the Pill, so there is a greater chance of becoming pregnant using other contraceptive methods.

Does the Alesse pill protect against AIDS?
No. Oral contraceptives do not protect against HIV infection (AIDS) and or any other STDs.

Are there any known side effects with Alesse?
The most commonly reported side effects are nausea, vomiting, bleeding between menstrual periods, weight gain, breast tenderness, and difficulty wearing contact lenses. Does taking alesse cause one to gain weight?
Although Alesse is one of the most effective birth control methods available, many women surveyed would avoid taking it altogether if they feared weight gain. In two recent studies, women taking ALESSE did not gain weight any more than did women taking a placebo (an inactive pill). In these studies (totaling 721 women), both groups had an average weight gain of 2 pounds or less over 6 months (no statistically significant differences). Weight change (gain or loss) has been associated with the use of all birth control pills. As is the case with everyone, how much one weighs depends mostly on what one eats and how much exercise one gets.

Why is this birth control pill low dose?
Todays pill is available in a number of low dose formulations with less hormones than the Pills your mother may have taken. These different brands have either 35 micrograms (mcg), 30 mcg, or 20 mcg of estrogen. All are 99% effective when taken as directed.

If I forget to take one pill, what should I do?
